The purpose of this webpage is to provide a list of all of the words of the Language of D’ni that have been published by Cyan, together with citation of the actual source of each item and some indication of the context. As a glance at the list of “Sources Cited” so far will show, information about the language has been revealed in diverse ways, ranging from inscriptions on artifacts and writings depicted in the Myst games, to reported speech in the novels, to terminology of the D’ni culture described on Cyan’s own websites. The “D’ni Lexicon” constitutes the bulk of this webpage, in which transcriptions and translations of words and contextual phrases where they occur have been cited, insofar as these are known, or when they can be inferred. Speculative translations are placed in brackets “[ ]” and queried where they are very uncertain or mere guesswork. As further data are published, this page will be revised.
A short “Rivenese Lexicon” follows the main word-list. As some of these words are lacking known synonyms in D’ni they may provide indirect evidence, while having an intrinsic interest of their own. A collection of “Transcriptions” of longer texts follows the word-lists. An “Index of English Glosses” is given at the end of the dictionary listing translations for words whose meaning is known or nearly certain, in either of the D’ni or Rivenese languages.
Some words have been published both in the D’ni writing system and in a Roman transliteration. Others have been published only in transliteration or only in the original script, and in the latter case the word has been transliterated here. Cyan’s mode of rendering D’ni into Roman letters varies somewhat according to the circumstances, but always based on an attempt to use conventions that are familiar from the representation of English sounds. I have adopted a mode that reflects the least ambiguous of these variants (see the tables below) and use it consistently for all words transcribed from words published in the D’ni script. But I have also cited words published in transliteration in the form Cyan actually uses for that word or phrase.
The following table gives the letters of the D’ni Alphabet in the order they are displayed in the Schoolroom on Riven. There are 24 letters and an apostrophe, here numbered using the D’ni system. It is not a coincidence that there are the same number of letters as there are numerals, and indeed the graphic similarities between the two systems (especially if one imagines the numerals without the boxes around them) show that they are related to each other at some historical level. For more about the construction of the D’ni letters see this page at the Guild of Linguists website.
Transcription of the basic letters:
Transcription of the modified letters:
These tables were made by Jehon, who has also created a downloadable D’ni font ( link ).
Note that Cyan uses I and ai for the letter represented here by í, frequently uses e for eh, and a for ah, and occasionally uses ay for ai, u for uh, oi for oy, and e for ee. In proper names (D’ni, Rakeri, etc.) final i is used for ee. Other variations will also be found in use among students of the language and writing of the D’ni. There is no fixed standard of transcription because the D’ni culture never had any substantial contact with those cultures that use the Roman Alphabet; although we do know the mode of transcription taught by Atrus to his daughter Yeesha, as illustrated here in the game Myst IV: Revelation.
The text of Atrus’s Prayer in the 1996 Myst Calendar ( link ) seems to be written in the same language as the other D’ni texts that have been published, but the assignment of phonetic values to certain letter-forms appears to be slightly different.
The following is a chart of the values used in Atrus’s Prayer:
#1 = [v] #1' = [b] |
#2 [not used] | #3 = [s] #3' = [sh] |
#4 = [j] ? #4' = [g] |
|
#5 = [ts] | #6 = [n]
#6' = [k] |
#7 = [i]
#7' = [ee] |
#8 = [f] #8' = [p] |
#9 = [ah]
or [a] |
#10 = [eh] #10' = [ai] |
#11 = [r] | #12 [not used]
|
#13 = [th] | #14 = [dh] #14' = [d] |
#15 = [h] | #16 = [o] #16' = [oy] |
#17 = [t] | #18 = [w] ? | #19 = [uh] #19' = [oo] |
#20 = [kh] | #21 = [l] | #22 = [ch] | #23 = [z] | #24 = [m] |
The values are based on inferences from the text. Words that (if read according to the published values used in other texts) would appear quite unfamiliar, such as nirkhchivon, yiv cheh, ch’gehschoy, b’fisí, or g’aehv i’shehn, become sensible when the proposed substitutions (indicated in red on the chart) are made. We get mahrntahvom ‘your creation’, tsahv teh ‘I live in’, t’gehstoy ‘by art’, b’fahsee ‘entirely’ (‘to twenty-five’), and g’chehv ah’ shehm ‘and I thank you’.
An explanation of this variant D’ni alphabet has not been forthcoming. But the fact that it employs fewer symbols, that some of the differences seem nevertheless to reflect a similarity of shape, and that this is the earliest published sample of D’ni script, suggest that the full deciphering of the alphabet by the DRC may not have been completed yet at the time this text was published in 1996. This would mean that some of the letters were still incorrectly understood in documents found during the restoration efforts, with the implication that Atrus’s Prayer was preserved in some other form — perhaps a transcription into the Latin alphabet in one of his journals — and was rendered into what the DRC thought was correct D’ni at that time.
In this Dictionary of the
Language of D’ni, since the words have all been transcribed,
they have been listed in approximate Roman Alphabetical order,
though a separate section is given for each separate D’ni
letter. Thus all of the words beginning with dh
come in a section following all of the words beginning with d,
and similarly there are separate sections for ee, eh,
kh, etc. For those
who are more familiar with the D’ni Alphabetical order, the
following links should provide easy access to sections of the
Dictionary:

This list will be expanded as words from other sources are added to the Dictionary.
